What first graders are learning
First grade builds directly on kindergarten foundations. In math, counting turns into real fluency with addition and subtraction — including strategies like making ten and using ten frames — while kids also start comparing and understanding numbers through place value, telling time, counting money, and even a first taste of fractions. In reading, phonics grows more sophisticated: beyond single letter sounds, first graders tackle consonant blends, digraphs, long vowel patterns, and vowel teams, while reading comprehension stretches into longer stories. Writing introduces the building blocks of grammar, starting with nouns and parts of speech, alongside continued handwriting practice.
