What third graders are learning
Third grade is a turning point in math — multiplication and division take over as the central focus, building on the addition and subtraction fluency from earlier grades, while rounding and an early look at fractions round out the number skills. In reading, passages grow longer and more varied, and word study deepens with prefixes, suffixes, and a close look at homophones — words that sound alike but mean different things. Writing takes a big leap forward too: third graders move beyond single sentences into real writing genres, planning and drafting narrative, opinion, and descriptive pieces, all supported by a much deeper grasp of grammar covering nouns, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions.
