What fourth graders are learning
Fourth grade math shifts firmly toward fractions and decimals — comparing them, adding and subtracting them, and understanding how they relate to each other — while multiplication and division grow into multi-digit territory and geometry introduces angles, area, and perimeter for the first time. In reading, the focus moves from simply understanding a passage to actively using strategies: inferring, identifying text structure, and picking apart an author's craft, alongside rich vocabulary work with idioms, synonyms, and shades of meaning. Writing sharpens grammar precision — especially verb tenses — while giving students real room to write personally and creatively through reflective prompts.
