What kindergartners are learning

Kindergarten is where foundational math and reading skills take root. In math, kids move from simply counting objects to understanding numbers well enough to add and subtract them, recognize odd and even patterns, and take their first look at reading a clock. In reading, the focus is almost entirely on phonics — connecting letters to sounds — building from beginning sounds and short vowels up to blended sounds like "ch" and "sh," with a few short comprehension stories woven in once those skills take hold. Writing at this stage is mostly about the physical skill of forming letters, numbers, and shapes through guided tracing.
